Credentials That Count: Why Those Post-Nominal Letters Matter

You may have noticed that many ITRA Global members include letters after their names. These aren’t just for show—they represent professional certifications and designations that signal advanced training, proven expertise, and recognition within the commercial real estate industry. Here’s a quick guide to some of the most common ones you’ll see.

CCIM

The Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation is one of the most respected in the industry, with fewer than 10% of professionals holding it. Earning the title requires completing advanced coursework in financial and market analysis, passing a comprehensive exam, and demonstrating significant deal experience. The process usually takes one to three years and signals expertise in investment analysis and negotiation.

For clients, working with a CCIM means having an advisor who brings proven expertise, analytical skills, and a deep understanding of how to create value in commercial real estate transactions.

SIOR

The Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) recognizes top performers in industrial and office real estate. Members must meet strict transaction volume or income thresholds, have at least five years of experience, and secure endorsements from existing designees. The designation covers six specialties, including Industrial, Office, and Advisory Services. Candidates typically complete coursework and an exam within a year.

For clients, working with an SIOR means confidence that their advisor is among the most accomplished and trusted in the field, with proven expertise in handling complex, high-value transactions.

RICS & MRICS

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a globally respected professional body that sets standards in real estate, construction, and land management in more than 140 countries. RICS provides education, training, and a strict code of ethics that ensures its members deliver the highest level of professionalism and integrity. Within RICS is the Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) designation. To earn MRICS, professionals must complete advanced academic programs or demonstrate extensive industry experience, then pass a rigorous assessment process.

For clients, it’s a trusted mark that their advisor brings integrity, knowledge, and international credibility to every transaction.

WBENC and WBENC-Certified WBE

The Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) is the leading certifier of women-owned businesses in the United States. This certification confirms that a business is at least 51% owned, controlled, and managed by a woman. Once certified, members have access to a vast and exclusive support system and targeted business opportunities, networking and mentorship opportunities.

A Women’s Business Enterprise (WBENC-Certified WBE) takes this a step further by verifying the business through a rigorous certification process that verifies the business is owned, managed, and controlled by a woman. Once certified the business has access to WBENC Corporate Members and a number of federal, state and local government agencies. The difference between the two is that a WBENC is a certification for an individual and a WBENC-Certified WBE is a certification for a business.

For clients, this means they are working with a rigorously verified, women-owned business that brings credibility, access to exclusive opportunities, and a strong commitment to diversity and excellence.

MCR

The Master of Corporate Real Estate (MCR) designation is a credential awarded by CoreNet Global. It recognizes advanced expertise in areas such as workplace strategy, portfolio management, and real estate leadership within large organizations. To earn the designation, candidates must have several years of experience and complete a series of in-depth courses and a capstone project.

For clients, an advisor with the MCR designation brings specialized knowledge in aligning real estate decisions with overall business strategy.

CRE

The Counselor of Real Estate (CRE) designation is granted by invitation only to professionals recognized for exceptional expertise, ethics, and service. The application process is extensive and includes recommendations, a personal interview, and peer review.

For clients, this means your advisor has been recognized among the most trusted and accomplished professionals in the industry, bringing proven expertise and integrity.

These designations demonstrate that ITRA Global members bring not only local market knowledge but also specialized training and professional recognition. Learn more about ITRA Global here.
